"DISPATCHES FROM THE NIGHTCLUB LITERATI"

VERBAL ABUSE is a literary quarterly for the culturally jaded, published in print from 1993-1995, and returning in a digital edition in 2015-16. Begun in 1993 at New York's JACKIE 60 nightclub and its monthly reading series, the magazine presents arts & letters of a distinctly different stripe, embracing sexual themes and other material often unpublishable elsewhere.

Jackie 60's VERBAL ABUSE reading series was started in 1990 by club producer and poet CHI CHI VALENTI as a late-night alternative to New York's insular poetry scene. The first issue of Verbal Abuse magazine was a veritable greatest hits of the reading series and an instant collector's item - only 1,000 were printed. A tiny, dedicated editorial collective, including DJ-turned-graphic designer JOHNNY DYNELL (Art Director), author TERENCE SELLERS (Submissions Editor), and photographer MICHAEL JAMES O'BRIEN (Editor at Large) assembled each themed issue with Valenti. The magazine blossomed, but became too expensive to print after issue 4.

Happily, that has changed with the advent of digital publishing, which means a new fifth issue is on the horizon for 2015-16. Till then, a sampling from the first three issues with purchasing information where available, with more news coming as it unfolds.
