Night of a Thousand Stevies is probably the best-known Stevie Nicks
fan event in the world, a riot of shawls, lace, baby's breath, twirling,
tambourines and great performance. This event began at JACKIE 60 over a
decade ago, and has stayed close to its roots while growing every year.
After ten years at MOTHER, CRYSTAL VISIONS, our 11th annual edition, was held on April 24 at the
Factory's new home, DON HILL'S in downtown NY. The spectacle transplanted beautifully
to the new venue with its larger stage and rock-and-roll vibe.
The 2001 edition featured founder EMPRESS CHI CHI VALENTI , BELLADONNA (Santa Barbara,)
JOEY ARIAS ,
HATTIE HATHAWAY ,
JIMMY JAMES, MISS GLAMAMORE, NICOLE NICKS,
SHERRY VINE ,
AMBER GARBO (New Hampshire,) THE HOUSE OF DOMINATION ,
JESSICA RABBIT DOMINATION and JONNY TINGLE,
THE HOHOS , CARRIE CARLYLE,
BILLY O, BOBBY MILLER, first-timers
CASHETTA , MICHAEL GLAMOUR GOBLIN (San Francisco)
RICHARD ROCKSTAR, LIZZIE DAVIS (Texas,) and many more,
including GYPSY 83 star SARA RUE in three jam-packed sets. Songs
performed included three from TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA, perennials like
STAND BACK and RHIANNON, more obscure works like FIRE BURNING and this
year's most requested number TWISTED, which opened the show. The
all-Stevie DJs were POISON EVE, veteran of most of the ten previous
editions, CRAIG SPENCER of Pork and Jackie factory DJ Daddy JOHNNY DYNELL.
The night was graced by over a half-dozen gypsies who had travelled
in to represent Stevie enclaves from Flower Mound, Texas to San Francisco
onstage -their journeys to The Night make their performances especially moving.
Other special additions to this year's rites included a preview video peek at
GYPSY 83 (Todd Stephen's new film inspired by NOTS which debuts this June at the Gay and
lesbian Film Festival in New York) and generous TROUBLE IN
SHANGRI-LA giveaways courtesy of Warner Bros. As always, this Enchanted
evening climaxed in a twirl of shawls and tambourines with the Battle of
a Thousand Stevies near morning - the spacious new stage made room for a lot of
audience members who had never joined us before.
