ONE YEAR AT MOTHER (1999-2000)

A JAMIE CASERTANO GALLERY

"The closing of Jackie 60 was announced on my very first visit to Mother. I heard the crowd gasp and wondered what it was all about. A little over a year later, when the announcement of Mother's closing was made, I understood.." - Jamie Casertano, photographer

Little, dark and different, Jackie 60 had its own star system. Personages who belonged would somehow make their way to the club and find a place within it. So it was with the staff, who included cocktail waitress ROSE ROYALLE, an artist and Vietnam veteran (above left,) and bartenders ROB TALTY (above right) and JONNY TINGLE (below left, in costume as Sid Vicious.) All three served so much more than cocktails.
Jackie stars got to work harder than most, an example set from the top by co-founder, DJ and set designer JOHNNY DYNELL (below right on the turntables.) Years before multi-tasking became a word du jour, everyone did whatever they could to research, produce and deliver the relentless weekly themes.
THE WORLD OF TOMORROW: THE 1999 WORLD'S FAIR was the opening theme of Jackie's last glorious season, beginning in September, 1999. This play on "what the future was", as embodied in the robotic glory of New York's 1939 World's Fair, was one of the most visually stunning in the ten-year Jackie themeography. Here, four images from that night:
Jackie MC's HATTIE HATHAWAY (above left,) EMPRESS DOMINATION (above right) and PAUL ALEXANDER (below left) bring the theme home in their signature styles. The fab futurists DUELLING BANKHEADS (below right) brought down the house for the 1 A.M. revelers, one of the great acts who did their first show at Jackie circa 1991.
