PRELUDE TO A HOWL

One door closes, and another opens, indeed. With so many seminal East Village boites closed of late, it seemed a particularly delightful proposition when FEVA (the Federation of East Village Artists) invited THE JACKIE FACTORY to create a brand-new festival of nightclub performance this summer. LOW LIFE, our latest spectacle, will debut on September 8 as one of the anchor events of the HOWL FESTIVAL 2007, outdoors and free in Tompkins Square Park. First news on LOW LIFE @ HOWL and recommended July events follows, and there are always many more on THE MOTHERBOARDS. We hope you are taking a moment to enjoy the all-too-short pleasures of the season, and big welcome to all those who have subscribed since our last newsletter.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8
THE JACKIE FACTORY PRESENTS
LOW LIFE @ HOWL
CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF BRILLIANT BOWERY PERFORMANCE
EARLY EVENING 5-7 PM
TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK

JACKIE FACTORY producers CHI CHI VALENTI and JOHNNY DYNELL create a brand-new spectacle to crown the 2007 edition of the HOWL! FESTIVAL, presented by FEVA (the Federation of East Village Artists). This year's fourth edition will include several new additions to HOWL, and we're excited to be one of them. LOW LIFE, named for the LUC SANTE book, showcases The East Village - and especially, The Bowery - as the birthplace of Nightclub Performance traditions from Vaudeville to Neo-Burlesque.

Expect period star turns from ROBERT LA FOSSE and his BROADWAY B'HOYZ, MICHAEL T, VANGELINE THEATER, DUELLING BANKHEADS, JESSICA RABBIT DOMINATION, DEAN JOHNSON, EPIPHANY, JACKIE 60 MCs HATTIE HATHAWAY and PAUL ALEXANDER, chorine choreography by JULIE ATLAS MUZ, SWEETIE as BOSS TWEED and many more. Like Jackie Factory epic NIGHT OF 1000 STEVIES, LOW LIFE was also born of a single JACKIE 60 theme - LOW LIFE - THE DIVES OF OLD NEW YORK, circa 1997. The Jackie Crew will have lots more news of the HOWL in the weeks to come. But we couldn't resist sharing our excitement as we begin work on LOW LIFE.

The Howl! Festival was named in honor of the groundbreaking poem by ALLEN GINSBERG and began in 2002. HOWL celebrates the East Village and Lower East Side's role as a preeminent locus of culture, with signature events like the group reading of HOWL on Friday 9/8 and ART AROUND THE PARK. Centered in Tompkins Square Park, the festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors bringing to the clubs, galleries, parks, streets, and theaters of Manhattan's Lower East Side an explosion of dance, film, food, music, performance, painting, poetry, sculpture, and theater. Luminaries like JIM JARMUSCH, NAN GOLDIN, MOBY, BOY GEORGE, STEVE BUSCEMI, STEVE EARLE, KAREN FINLEY, LUIS GUZMAN, LOU REED, ED SANDERS and SUZANNE VEGA draw the festival's crowds but its real stars are the hardworking independent artists and writers who continue to invigorate the neighborhood with their inconoclastic spirit.

Note:
To avoid the inevitable emails on the subject - there is no WIGSTOCK this year as part of HOWL (like in 2002-5), as LADY BUNNY and CO. are enjoying the other pleasures of Summer! We are honored to be inheriting Wigstock's HOWL FESTIVAL slot, and hope the clacks of high-heeled size 14 pumps will guide us on our way!
