Yes, it's true, Jackie 60 producers Chi Chi Valenti, Johnny Dynell, Kitty Boots and Hattie Hathaway recently announced that the much-loved Tuesday-night performance club will close on the last Tuesday of the Century, December 28, 1999. At this writing in early April, there are 39 performances left.
As you, the faithful Jackie audience, will seemingly never stop supporting the club, we had to make the decision ourselves. Our main motivation was the sense of the century closing, and the tremendous opportunity to write Jackie gloriously into history, at rest in the decade that she spanned (1990-1999.) Like many of you, we have new ideas that we're eager to try out in the 21st century, and we will never get to produce them if we continue spending three to four days a week producing Jackie, as we've done for the past decade.
No, MOTHER isn't going anywhere! The opposite is true, actually: We are also closing Jackie to have time to nurture all her many offshoots that have sprouted up at MOTHER, including Click + Drag, Long Black Veil, MARTHA, The Theater at MOTHER, Heroes, the Interjackie and MOTHER web sites, and our Verbal Abuse E-zine and Reading Series.
Yes, all of the major annuals and series will still be produced by The Jackie Factory at MOTHER, scheduled for the Last Tuesday of each month. In 2000 these will include Betty Page 10, The Jackie Awards 9, Brown Party and Stevie Nicks 10, The House of Domination's 11th Birthday, at least one edition of Jackie Hackers, two new Jackie's Playhouse Presents and of course A Very Jackie Christmas.
Something brand-new that will excite the vast majority of the Jackie audience, we hope. The only thing we're prepared to say for sure is that Jackie 60 DJ JOHNNY DYNELL will be on the turntables.
No, for continuity's sake, she will be open every Tuesday through December 28, 1999.For the text of "JACKIE ABDICATES" Chi Chi Valenti's speech at the 1999 Jackie Awards, click here.
