Chi Chi Valenti's speech at the 1999 Jackie Awards

As many of you know, because you were there, Jackie 60 began in late November, 1990, and moved over to this hallowed house in March of 1991, an anniversary we celebrate every year with these awards. Since then, we've been blessed with the kind of extraordinary long run that almost never happens in clubs. We've also had the immense honor of finishing the club tradition for our century, a straight line of mischief and invention, of evening magic and meaningful glamour that began 100 years ago at clubs like the Chat Noir and The Cabaret Voltaire and ended up haunting this house, and this stage, for the very best part of a decade.

Now, our club motto, borrowed from the Situationists, has finally come true: we are leaving the 20th century for good. For history's sake we must leave Jackie 60 as well - intact in her times, like another much-cherished dowager queen - Victoria - who died just as her century ended. Therefore, on the last Tuesday of the 1900s - December 28, 1999, we will close the doors forever on the weekly Jackie 60, at the end of a party that will be Jackie's own fin de siecle, no matter what happens (or doesn't happen) a few nights later.

MOTHER is certainly NOT closing along with Jackie - rather the opposite - We are closing Jackie to have more time to devote to MOTHER and all her many offshoots, where next century's nightlife has alr eady begun: our ever-expanding cyber wing, Interjackie, and its own hit Saturday night, Click + Drag, The Theater at MOTHER, two web sites, Jackie's Playhouse, Martha, Verbal Abuse and Verbal Abuse presents, among others. In order to nurture these children, and so many to come, we have to release ourselves (with deep regrets) from the decade-long weekly production deadlines.

Beginning in late January, 2000, The Jackie Factory will produce monthly Last Tuesday events here at MOTHER, which will include all of the classic annuals, and several new installments a year. So, you'll still get to participate in Night of a Thousand Stevies and The Brown Party, Betty Page and even one more edition of The Jackie Awards a year from tonight (as we will have eleven months of performers to honor next year!) We in turn will be freer to re-invent and to invent - we owe you, our beloved audience, nothing less.

Much more triumphant than sad, this new beginning is filling us with excitement, which we hope you'll share. For all who have walked with us thus far, our deepest appreciation: for the stardust, for the brown couch memories and of course The Jackie Hustle. Now, the glorious final 41 performances await...
