RECOMMENDED JULY 2002 EVENTS

We constantly hear from visitors and locals alike - what's going on that I'll like in New York on a specific weekend or night? We can't possibly do personal recommendations, but instead launched this new monthly feature on Mothernyc.com - a smattering of highly recommended events happening this month. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but it should help point you towards some very special evenings and afternoons. The events are compiled twice monthly from listings on The Motherboards, our free user forums, press releases, and word of mouth. Here, some first three weeks of July events well worth attending. We welcome your feedback to factory@mothernyc.com.

THE COCKETTES

John Waters called the COCKETTES "the first hip drag queens," but the seminal early-Seventies San Francisco performance cult was so much more. If you have ever toyed with gender-illusion, glitter, avant performance or gay theatrics, then HIBISCUS and the rest of this tribe paved the way for you. The long-awaited documentary "The Cockettes" opened with a bang at the Quad Theater on the eve of Gay Pride Weekend, and is currently being held over for its third additional week. We adore this film and strongly recommend it!
From the www.cockettes.com website: "As the psychedelic San Francisco of the '60's began evolving into the gay San Francisco of the '70's, The Cockettes, a flamboyant ensemble of hippies (women, gay men, and babies) decked themselves out in gender-bending drag and tons of glitter for a series of legendary midnight musicals at the Palace Theater in North Beach.."

SAVE THE LAST DANCE CABARET

This first-ever fundraiser for the new coalition LEGALIZE DANCING NYC features a star-studded cast for a great cause - abolishing the city's antiquated Cabaret Laws. PENNY ARCADE (Legendary Comedienne,) WORLD FAMOUS BOB (Blonde Bombshell,) ST. EVE (Performance Art Siren,) DELPHINIA (Dance Collective,) HENRY FALKNER (Social Critic & Comedian,) JAMES GODWIN (Performance Shamen) and many more grace the intimate Slipper Room stage, with Mothernyc's CHI CHI VALENTI wearing the M.C. bonnet. After the shows, super-DJ JEANNIE HOPPER (Liquid Sound Lounge/WBAI) promises "Music to Shake Your Hiney To."
WHY: Because it really is illegal to dance in New York City. Legalize Dancing NYC, an umbrella organization, is working with City Councilman Alan Gerson's (Manhattan -- District One) office to introduce legislation to the NYC City Council to coincide with a free rally and performance in Tompkins Square Park in late fall. This grass-roots force needs your help to make your nightlife sooo much better!

SHE-DEVILS IN HIGH HEELS

The HOUSE OF DOMINATION, the all-girl gang who have graced a thousand go-go platforms, are a New York City fetish institution. Their annual birthday bashes are always a midsummer delight, with performances centered around a different "school" of female-dominant imagery. This year, house legends will join the JACKIE FACTORY to salute the SHE-DEVIL archetype, inspired by the 1961 exploitation film SATAN IN HIGH HEELS.
SATAN IN HIGH HEELS is an exploitation classic in the XX tradition, featuring a dominant go-go nightclub sequence involving a leatherette corset, riding crop and stiletto heels, thirty years before the House of Domination introduced such pleasures at Jackie 60. Three sets of House of D. go-go (at 11:30, 12:45 and 1:45) will be devoted to the MEG MYLES vehicle, with house luminaries like MARTI DOMINATION and JESSICA RABBIT playing the leading roles. Other Factory Folk will assist, including MC's EMPRESS DOMINATION and HATTIE HATHAWAY. The night also marks the Jackie event debut of SLANTY EYED MAMA, an Asiantrix spoken word trip-hop ensemble who wowed 'em at the recent BLACK & BLUE BALL.
